English description of the Festival in more words

Bathukamma festival of Telangana is celebrated nine days leading up to Dasara. During this season earth is sated with the monsoon rains, with shades of green and blossoms of various hues shoot from its breast.

Women pray Bathukamma and Unmarried girls pray Bodemma (Girl Bathukamma). Bathukamma is a floral creation with flowers found in Telangana region i.e. yellow Tangedu, white Gunugu, golden marigold.

The festival is celebrated for nine days and on the final day; every household creates their Bathukamma to worship and play Bathukamma Aata i.e. dance round the Bathukamma singing Bathukamma songs with one lead singer and the rest joining in chorus. Finally several

Bathukammas are placed at one place near the pond or river where they play together.

Families seek blessings of various goddesses like Lakshmi, Parvati, and Saraswathi.

At the end Bathukamma(s) are immersed in water. Women smear themselves with Pasupu (turmeric powder) on their cheeks and smear other women too. Environmentalists tell us that the flowers used in this festival have unique cleansing qualities; hence they are put in village ponds.
